Donald Trump is in the Philippines for ASEAN the final leg of his lengthy Asian trip

President Duterte formally opened the 31st ASEAN Summit on Monday.

Addessing the 20th ASEAN Plus Three (APT) summit on Tuesday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said China proposed to advance the construction of an East Asia Economic Community so as to promote regional integration and common development.

In a joint statement issued after the commemorative summit, the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) affirmed their resolve to keep peace, security and stability in the region, apart from pushing for strong economic engagement.

"India, being a founding member of the East Asia Summit, is committed to strengthening the East Asia Summit and making it more effective for dealing with contemporary challenges", it added.

Roque said the ASEAN and U.S. also called of a peaceful dialogue to ease the tension in the Korean peninsula.

Apart from the 10 ASEAN Member states, East Asia Summit includes India, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Russian Federation.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Congress and questioned the party's record on governance and also the scams that erupted before the 2014 elections. The leaders also discussed security and counter-terrorism issues.

The India-ASEAN Commemorative Summit, as the event is officially known, is an worldwide trade meet in which India holds dialogue with the ASEAN nations to celebrate New Delhi's diplomatic relations with these countries.

The prime minister is on a three-day trip to the Philippines.

The Prime Minister said that it was time for the ASEAN nations to jointly address the challenge of terrorism.

"We have individually strived very hard to fight terrorism and violent extremism".

Favouring deepening of trade ties, Modi said, "Maritime links established thousands of years ago between India and ASEAN countries have enabled our trade relations in the past and we have to work closely to further strengthen them".
