WATCH This is how a 10-year old fooled the iPhone X’s Face ID
When the iPhone X was first announced, it was widely agreed that its most impressive feature was Face ID, which replaced the traditional way of unlocking your phone via Touch ID. The 41-second-long video shows that the kid was easily able to unlock the iPhone X of Sherwani - there is some visible family resemblance, but some rather distinct facial features as well. She reregistered a third time in dimmer lighting to replicate her initial registration, and then, her son was able to unlock the phone again.
According to Wired, the son was able to unlock his mother's phone after she first registered her face.
The boy, Ammar Malik, was simply trying to get a look at his mother's newly purchased iPhone X. However, upon picking it up, the phone logged him straight in, past the biometrically protected lock screen. This put an end to Ammar's Face ID hacks.
Although Apple says Face ID is more secure than Touch ID, this raises questions about the possibility of false positives not only happening with twins and siblings around the same age, but with people of different sexes and significantly different ages.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. And that's it, easy access to the iPhone X with no fancy mask required.
If in case Face ID doesn't recognise a face, it presents a passcode input to users. Upon receiving your iPhone X, you're prompted to set up your Face ID profile. The fifth grader randomly picked one not knowing it was his mother's iPhone X, was taking a look into it and it just got unlocked, which wasn't supposed to happen. But the researchers' team at security firm Bkav allegedly proved that assurance wrong through a mask that cost $150 (approximately Rs. 9,800) to make. Meanwhile, there's also some "special processing done on the cheeks and around the face" where there are large areas of skin, and the nose is created from silicone. For additional protection, Face ID allows only five unsuccessful match attempts before a passcode is required to obtain access to your iPhone.
