Engineer burnt alive by spurned lover on the doorstep of her home in Chennai
A woman in Chennai on Tuesday died of severe burn injuries after she, her mother and sister were allegedly set ablaze by a 23-year-old man, who police believe was stalking her for the last one month.
The woman in the incident succumbed to her injuries, while the mother and sister are being examined in a hospital.
The attack took place around 9pm on Monday, when Akash went to the woman's house in South Chennai's Velachery.
Furious after his proposal getting rejected, the accused started stalking her because of which she had even stopped going to her office. According to the statistics on crime against women tabled in the Lok Sabha by minister of state for home Hansraj Ahir recently, stalking cases showed a consistent rise in last three years. Induja's parents were averse to Akash meeting her. As per recent reports, Akash, who is a science graduate, has been arrested.
Police said, the man splashed petrol on Induja and used a lighter to set her on fire.
On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house. And when they opened the door he poured the can of petrol on Induja.
Media reports cited neighbours claiming that the ambulance arrived too late, at least 40 minutes after a call was made. Her father Shanmugam (48) is working in Dubai.
