Japan's PM Abe arrives in PH for ASEAN-related summits

Watch: Japanese PM Shinzo Abe takes a tumble playing round of golf with Trump

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discuss matters during their bilateral meeting at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on November 13, 2017.

On North Korea, the leaders affirmed that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is their shared goal and agreed to work in closer coordination for regional peace and prosperity, including through the full enforcement of United Nations sanctions resolutions.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Trump are in Manila for the ASEAN Summit, and fronted media together with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday.

"But I can assure you that in the matter of the interest of your country and mine, we are supporting you against what North Korea is doing", Duterte said.

"We condemn his several launching of missiles". "And he should realize that he'd be responsible for ending life in this planet if his mind goes out of control", he added.

"That is why we are persuading him, maybe pleading him to stop the aggressive posture".

While Tokyo is expected to take pains to stress these messages are not specifically aimed at China, the importance placed on coordination with each of the 10 members of ASEAN reflects Abe's desire to assert a place for Japan in the face of Beijing's rising regional influence. "We intend to make every effort to move closer". "The Philippines is about too far but, you know, nobody will save us from a holocaust if it happens", he added.

North Korea's rapidly-progressing missile and nuclear tests have heightened tensions within its neighboring regions and raised alarm in the worldwide community.

The Philippine leader, known for his colorful language, earlier called North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "chubby" and "son of b***h".

While its shows of power have been met with heavy economic sanctions from the United Nations, it remains defiant and has on several occasions threatened to fire missiles over the USA territory of Guam.

In a speech before South Korea's national assembly last week, Mr. Trump warned North Korea not to "underestimate" the U.S.

Their meeting came on the heels of talks between Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vietnam on Saturday, where the leaders agreed to make a "new start" in bilateral ties that have often been strained by territorial and historical grievances.
