Toddler is lone survivor in Detroit-area crash

The mother of two victims of the deadly crash on I-94 spoke to 7 Action News about her children.

Mike Shaw told WXYZ-TV that the child, who only suffered minor injuries, was improperly buckled into the auto seat.

The crash killed four people inside, but a 1-year-old child survived with only minor injuries.

A preliminary investigation shows the SUV was speeding when the driver, Doreal Rodgers, lost control, crossed three lanes and crashed.

"That was the only thing that saved the baby was the auto seat", John said.

But no one could save the others who were going too fast and not wearing seatbelts.

The only survivor was the one-year-old son of Alesia Maddox, who was sitting behind his mother in a auto seat.

Four people died after an SUV crashed on the I-94 in MI, but police say a toddler walked away with only minor injuries. "That was the only thing that probably ... saved the baby".

The Buick SUV was speeding down Interstate-94 in Harper Woods when the driver tried to pass another vehicle, lost control, careened across the lanes, and ended up striking the bridge around 1 a.m., the Associated Press and the Detroit Free-Press reported.

"It wasn't the right age, it wasn't the right fit, it wasn't the right anything and still saved this kid's life", Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said of the vehicle seat that was holding a 1-year-old.

State police said a traffic crash reconstruction unit is investigating.

Lt. Shaw said there is no evidence of alcohol or narcotics being a factor in the crash, but the investigation is continuing.
