The North Korean soldier shot while defecting to the South on Monday was racing towards the border in a vehicle when a wheel came loose, forcing him to escape on foot under fire from North Korean soldiers, the South Korean government and military said.
"He crossed from a North Korea post towards our [South Korean] Freedom House", the South said in a statement.
While on average more than 1,000 North Koreans defect to the South every year, most travel via China and it is unusual for a North Korean to cross the land border dividing the two Koreas, which have been in a technical state of war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.
The most famous incident was in 1976, when two American army officers were killed by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers.
The ministry official said the soldier's condition and military rank remained to be verified.
South Korean forces have identified him only as "A" and said the man arrived in the country on Friday. A U.N. Command helicopter later transported him to the Ajou medical center, according to South Korean officials.
It's the first time since a 2007 exercise near Guam that three U.S. carrier strike groups are operating together in the Western Pacific, according to the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet.
It said an investigation into Monday's event was ongoing.

He added that Russian Federation, like South Korea, has deep interest in the peace of the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing it is his country's persistent stance.
