Jimmy Fallon makes emotional return to 'Tonight Show' after mom's death

Taylor Swift performs 'New Year's Day'

It's pretty raw stuff, especially from a host who's often accused of being somewhat one-note and superficial.

It was his first return to the show since his mother passed away earlier this month at age 68, and Fallon spoke of the enormous role his mother played in his life.

At the start of the show, Fallon told a touching story from his childhood, in which his mother squeezed his hand three times to say I love you.

He added, "Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something attractive for Jimmy and our show today, and we're forever grateful".

He thanked his fans for watching the "Tonight Show" and supporting him through the hard time. The best. She loved the show, she loved all of us, and most of all, she loved Jimmy.

"Last week I was in the hospital, and I squeezed her hand and said 'I love you, '" Fallon said, through tears, explaining, "I just knew we were in trouble".

The song's haunting second verse particularly resonated across Studio 6-B: "You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi / I can tell that it's gonna be a long road / I'll be there if you're the toast of the town, babe / Or if you strike out and you're crawling home". "She said yes with zero hesitation", DiCenzo wrote.

"Last week I was in the hospital and I grabbed her and squeezed her and said, 'I love you, '" he continued. I love you.' I was crying.

The 27-year-old songstress, dressed in a metallic hoodie for her close-up, shared a touching moment with the tearful host post-performance, as they embraced and she patted him on the back. "I think there was like a thing where everyone wanted to be a nun". It was a handsome coincidence in a lovely performance.
