Transport Minister Andrew Constance said Boaty McBoatface was the most popular vote, following a public vote in the United Kingdom to name a new polar research ship.

The last of Sydney's new inner-harbour ferries will be christened Ferry McFerryface - for the kids.

Ferry McFerryface is part of Sydney's new, modern ferry fleet that will carry 400 passengers, have Wi-Fi, and advanced facilities for the disabled.

Previously ferries have been named after iconic Australians or indigenous leaders.

The internet's commitment to the [thing] y Mc [thing] face construction has been steadfast so far, beginning in 2016 with a British research vessel dubbed - under similar polling circumstances - Boaty McBoatface.

But Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said they wanted to avoid a double up.

The cultural impact of Boaty McBoatface has been felt across the world, with a train in Sweden being named Trainy McTrainface and a horse at Sydney's Warwick Farm racecourse being named Horsey McHorseface. Three of the six ferries have been named for distinguished local residents who include a heart surgeon and an obstetrician.

Hundreds of Sydneysiders put forward naming suggestions for a new fleet of Sydney ferries and the most popular names were "Boaty McBoatface" and "Ferry McFerryFace".

Watch Andrew Constance discuss the genesis of Ferry McFerryface, below.

But the organisers decided not to use the name, opting for Sir David Attenborough instead.
