Barbie makes doll of hijab-wearing Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad

14 November 2017, 01:51 | Myron Mathis

As it did for Ashley Graham and Ava DuVernay before her, Mattel has made a custom doll to honor the athlete, the first Muslim-American woman on a U.S. Olympic team to wear a hijab. "I feel like we're just shattering all the little glass ceilings".

A one-of-a-kind doll made in her likeness was unveiled at Glamour's Women of the Year Live Summit Monday, as the latest doll in Barbie's "Shero" line (that would be female heroes), a program that celebrates boundary-breaking women meant to inspire the next generation.

About Glamour: Glamour is one of the biggest fashion and beauty media brands in the world, now reaching an all-time high of one out of eight American women, with 9.7 million print readers, more than 11 million unique monthly users online, and over 14 million followers across social media platforms. "I don't think there's anything wrong with little girls wanting to wear makeup or role-play with their dolls-and also for their dolls to be badass sportswoman on the fencing strip, in hijab".

The company followed suit with Ken dolls earlier this year. As a brand, Mattel has recently taken major steps to create a vast selection of dolls that represent women of all backgrounds and experiences. "By honoring her story, we hope this doll reminds them that they can be and do anything".

"I'm excited to just partner with a brand that I know honors powerful women who are breaking barriers and whose sole goal is to impact the future leaders of tomorrow", she said to PEOPLE. She's thrilled to have inspired a Barbie in her likeness, and especially proud that the doll will be the first Barbie to wear a hijab. That's just another reason that she is a flawless choice for the Shero Barbie honor.

You can expect the doll to look like Muhammad beyond the hijab, too-from the body type to the makeup. The first is to make "playtime more inclusive", all the while "getting children accustomed to seeing headscarves in order to help fight stigma".

The doll will be the first ever Barbie to wear a hijab in history, according to People.

Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad is quite a doll - literally.

One of Mattel's effort to make Barbie better is by recreating groundbreaking women as Barbies as part of their "Shero" line. And that's something to celebrate.
