Gareth Southgate claims senior players damaged Loftus-Cheek's development at Chelsea

21-year-old midfielder Loftus-Cheek, who is now on loan at Crystal Palace, produced a performance of maturity and class in the goalless draw against the world champions.

The 21-year-old shone in an attacking midfield role on his debut, with his strength pace and skill suddenly giving Southgate another interesting option as he continues to build his squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation next summer.

Loftus-Cheek was one of five players to make his debut against the world's top-ranked side and produced a man-of-the match display, just as Winks did when making his bow in last month's 1-0 qualifying win in Lithuania.

At 21, he is the same age as Alli but has barely made 40 caps in his professional career, while the Spurs midfielder has played close to 200 games in all competitions and is an England regular.

"He has great technical quality, dribbling ability, power, I think he's a really exciting player". "Despite his size, appearance and the way he plays, he's not hugely confident at times and I think tonight it took him 10 minutes to have a look around him and think "all right, OK, I can do this". I watched him early-season and I saw flashes.

Loftus-Cheek is convinced Palace will improve once Christian Benteke is back fully fit.

More young talent is set to join the squad ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Brazil.

"We've got to be a team that are switched on because against the very best if you get the pressing wrong then they'll carve you apart".

"I think that's one of the most pleasing things of working with this group over a period of time".

"They don't have a game and for them to be involved with a game against Brazil will be a brilliant experience for them. I'll find out who played well tonight (for the Under-21s), who warrants the decision, and liaise with Aidy (Boothroyd) on that and go from there".
