Thousands Attend Women's March On Washington

Atlantic County Freeholder-elect Ashley Bennett was a special guest on MSNBC Wednesday night following her victory over John Carman in Tuesday's general election.

Carman posted a meme on the day of the Women's March that featured a woman in a kitchen and the message, "Will the women's protest be over in time for them to cook dinner?"

Carman apologized in a written statement a few days later. "Ashley is looking forward to restoring dignity to the freeholder seat, and doing all she can to help strengthen Atlantic County's crumbling economy, reverse the uptick in foreclosures, and improve access to medical assistance for those in need".

Carman said the meme was "a bad choice", but that the women in his life were "strong and confident" enough to not be offended by his joke. One woman held a box of macaroni and cheese and instructions for Carman to make his own dinner. She's excited to begin her term as an Atlantic County freeholder in January.

Bennett, who'd never held public office, infuriated that an elected official would perpetuate unsafe stereotypes at that particularly sensitive time, wrote about it on Facebook, according to the Associated Press. The district is considered a Republican stronghold, but Bennett beat the incumbent by nearly 1,000 votes out of about 14,000 cast.

Still, Carman's response to the controversy upset Bennett, and she said on MSNBC that she made a decision to run shortly after the meeting. The 32-year-old is new politics, this being her first run for office. "I am beyond speechless and incredibly grateful to serve my community", she told Inquirer reporter Amy S. Rosenberg.

Carman has been criticised for other controversial acts: in October, for example, he was seen wearing a jacket bearing the Confederate flag, a divisive symbol in the United States. "Lighten up", Carman wrote to one offended constituent.
