Seattle elects its first lesbian mayor

Seattle Elects Jenny Durkan As Its First Female Mayor in Nearly a Century

Durkan captured just over 60 percent of the votes while Moon tallied about 40 percent.

The city's leader was bound to be a woman no matter what, as Durkan faced off against another female candidate, Cary Moon. Former Seattle mayor Ed Murray served starting in 2014, but resigned this year on September 13 amid allegations by men he sexually molested them.

Durkan will be seated on November 28 when the election results are certified. Now there is just one openly lesbian mayor of a major US city (Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski). "I took that role seriously, mentoring others and talking about how coming out was - and remains - important to demonstrating to everyone the reality of our humanity", she wrote.

The Seattle Times endorsed Durkan last month, calling her the "best choice to be Seattle's next mayor".

Now just one out lesbian mayor of major US city.

She also said that the city can "show was it looks like when progressive values are put into action". She is the first out lesbian to hold the office and the first woman since 1928. The editorial called her an "accomplished attorney with state and federal experience who successfully led the fight for Seattle police reforms as USA attorney".

She's used to breaking barriers, further exemplified by the fact that she was the only female baggage handler while working at a small Alaskan airport.

"Just imagine what they're going to blame on me".
