US, S. Korea to conduct joint naval drill amid tensions with N. Korea

South Korea news outlet Chosun reported recently that the USA has been considering using this armada to test North Korea like never before, by sailing the aircraft carrier north of the Northern Limit Line, the de facto maritime border of North Korea.

Pyongyang responded to the report through its state-run KCNA news agency, which said, "If the USA imperialists and the South Korean puppets ignite an aggressive nuclear war against us, it would only advance their own demise".

The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan was expected to arrive at South Korea in the near future as the South Korean navy announced the joint maritime drills with the US navy next week.

Yonhap quoted a South Korean official who said the Tucson "had left" and that the U.S. Navy "did not disclose its next destination".

The drill, called Maritime Counter Special Operations Exercise, is aimed at defending the infiltration of enemy special forces, according to the navy. In April, South Korean media reported that Navy SEALs aboard the MI had trained with a local force to decapitate North Korea's Kim Jong Un regime.

The vessel is carrying Tomahawk cruise missiles, used by the U.S.in the early April attack on Syria's Shayrat airbase.

"Measuring more than 360 feet long, Tucson is one of the stealthiest and most advanced submarines in the world", the navy said in a written statement. The super-carrier is accompanied by Aegis destroyers, guided missile cruisers, combat support ships and a nuclear-powered submarine.

The U.S. Airforce said the drill was the "first time" that B-1B Lancer strategic bombers had conducted nighttime combined training with Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF).
