UAE announces halt to visa issuance to N.Koreans
The UAE foreign ministry also announced on Thursday an end to the creation of new business licenses for North Korean companies wishing to operate in the UAE.
The fate of the thousands of North Korean laborers already in the UAE remains up in the air.
"The measures ... come within the context of its obligation as a responsible member of the worldwide community to strengthen the global will and to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons and missile programs", the ministry said.
The MoFAIC affirmed that the UAE has developed an executive framework in collaboration with state departments in the country to implement UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea and its nuclear program, primarily Resolutions 2371 and 2375.
Japan and South Korea, both neighbors of the rogue state, have also pressured Gulf countries to stop employing North Korean workers.
Experts say North Korean laborers help Pyongyang avoid global sanctions and raise money for its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
"There have never been workers from North Korea working on any World Cup construction sites", Qatar's Government Communications Office said in a statement, adding some companies had employed North Koreans prior to 2015.
Kuwait has North Korea's only embassy in the Gulf region.
There are up to 1,300 North Koreans working in the UAE.
