Sharapova moves into Tianjin Open semifinals

Maria Sharapova reached her second semi-final since returning to tennis in April, hammering Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-3 6-1 at the Tianjin Open in China.

The first-round match was played on Wednesday after rain wreaked havoc with the schedule.

Former world No.1 Sharapova, ranked 86th after coming back following a 15-month doping ban, also reached the semis six month ago at her comeback event in Stuttgart.

Second seed Williams, playing in her second match since the US Open, lost 7-5 6-2 to the Japanese, who is ranked 64th in the world. "I had a first practice outdoors, and then I think it rained for 70 hours straight, unfortunately for the players".

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus is also through to the quarters, beating Zhu Lin of China 6-3 6-4.

Home hope Peng thrashed Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-0 6-1 in their quarter-final while Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus beat local hope Zhu Lin 6-3 6-4 in another quarter-final and awaits the victor of the match between Christina McHale and Sara Errani. The Swiss defeated fifth seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-2 6-3.

Sara Errani returned from a two-month suspension for a failed drug test to cruise to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova.

Voegele and Sharapova shared early break, but from the sixth game the Russian took control of the match.
