NOPD officer fatally shot in New Orleans East
A city police officer was shot and killed while on routine patrol early Friday morning, reports CBS New Orleans affiliate WWL-TV. It was then that a suspect opened fire, striking the slain officer several times.
The officer was taken by EMS to University Medical Center, where Harrison said doctors pronounced the officer dead.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu says the officer was shot and killed.
Superintendent Harrison declined to identify the deceased officer at this time.
The deceased officer's identity has not been released. "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", he said. He said that's when a suspect fired shots, hitting the officer.
The New Orleans Force Investigation Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting, according to department protocol, Harrison said. The officer collapsed at the scene, while the perpetrator ran to a nearby apartment complex.
State Police and ATF were also on the scene early Friday morning.
"Our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
