BioWare fans won't rest easy tonight with Mass Effect and Jade Empire writer and Dragon Age: Inquisition director Mike Laidlaw departing the company. One wonders if Guns N' Roses' "14 Years" will be playing throughout the BioWare office.

Over the past couple of years, Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare has lost several employees in key roles.

Making the announcement on Twitter last night, Laidlaw provided few details about his decision, writing only that "it's time for [him] to move on". Mike Laidlaw has been paramount to works such as the Mass Effect trilogy, the Dragon Age franchise, and the infamous Jade Empire title. However, Laidlaw states, "I have every confidence that the world we've created together is in good hands and I'm excited for the road ahead".

The next Dragon Age game may have just suffered a big blow, but we know the franchise as a whole certainly has.

Laidlaw didn't go into details regarding the reasons for his departure, and said that in the meantime he plans to spend some time 'reconnecting with all the unbelievable games and worlds that my peers have created.' He'll probably be taking a well-earned break before moving onto his next endeavour.

However, Laidlaw also said that it's unwise to stick to such a rigid plan. You've made my time "in Thedas" wonderful.

As Laidlaw was such an integral part of the Dragon Age team in particular, some fans may have concerns about the quality of the next Dragon Age game.
