The convertible DB11 variant joins the existing coupe model that launched a year ago, powered by a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 503 horsepower.

Unlike the coupe, which launched with a 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12, the Aston Martin DB11 Volante is only available with the recently introduced 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 sourced by Mercedes-AMG.

The Volante has the coupe's 4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which produces 503bhp and propels the vehicle to 62mph from a standstill in 4.1 seconds.

The overall design and styling of the convertible mimics the coupe, except for the fabric roof of course.

The eight-layer convertible fabric roof is available in red, dark silver or grey silver. But overall it's a svelte transition from coupe to convertible with, as expected, attractive attention to detail.

Like the coupe, the V8 unit sends 503 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic.

As a convertible, there's some creature comforts such as a heated steering wheel and rear-seat ISOFIX attachments points to encourage drop-top driving. Regardless, the Volante will have options of wood or carbon fiber veneer panels on the seat backs, among other touches.

According to Aston Martin's announcement this morning, the roof takes 14 seconds to lower and 16 seconds to close, and can be moved at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour with a 31 mph headwind.

The eight layered roof protects you from the most extreme weather (it was tested in Death Valley and the Arctic Circle) and wind noise. The new hood design also results in a 20% larger boot capacity than the outgoing DB9 Volante. "The challenge of creating a convertible vehicle is retaining structural and dynamic integrity", Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer Max Szwaj explains.

Deliveries for the new Aston Martin DB11 Volante will begin in Q1 2018, with prices starting at $216,495 in the US.

The new model is created to be lighter and sportier than its predecessor while still adding interior space and comforts that a well-heeled Aston Martin owner may expect.
