Anti-vax mum's son immunised while she's jailed for defying court order
13 October 2017, 09:54 | Melissa Porter
A mother who served jail time after refusing a judge's order to vaccinate her son was distraught to find the boy's father had the shots administered when he had custody, according to a Wednesday court hearing.
Rebecca Bredow, the MI anti-vax mother who was jailed because she refused to let her son receive vaccinations, was not happy to learn that her son received four immunizations this week.
Her ex-husband, Jason Horne, chose to abide by the court order and had their son vaccinated on Monday.
"It's been a rough few days to say the least", she added. The judge also granted temporary custody to Horne and ordered the boy to be vaccinated.
Bredow, 40, was in contempt of court after she ignored an order from an Oakland County judge who told her she had one week to get her son vaccinated. While his ex-wife was in jail, he followed the court order and had his son receive the first round of vaccines.
Almost half of the states allow for nonmedical exemptions, including MI.
7 Action News said Bredow and her ex-husband had agreed to vaccinate the child, but her views had since changed. A statement about Horne's version of their agreement has not been obtained. He told the Detroit Free Press that Bredow had been the primary custodian but the judge approved a recommendation for an evenly split custody on Wednesday.
When asked if the experience of going to jail was worth it in the end, especially given the outcome, the mother-of-two said she still stands by her anti-vaxx stance.
"She's devastated", Bredow's attorney, Steven Vitale, said.
"I would rather go to jail for standing up for what I believe in than vaccinating my child", Bredow said prior to sentencing.
