In North America, cases of West Nile virus (WNV) occur during mosquito season, which starts in the summer and continues through fall.
This confirmed case has resulted in a fatality, according to a news release from the Meigs County Health Department.
Detection in chickens means there is a risk for the virus to spread to humans through mosquito bites.
Richland County is reminding residents and business owners to protect themselves from mosquitoes, as health officials report an increase in the number of the pests infected with West Nile this year. In recent years, OH reported 17 human West Nile Virus cases in 2016 including four deaths, 35 in 2015 including two deaths and 11 in 2014 including one death.
The horse contracted the virus in an area that had previously been subject to aerial spraying for mosquitoes, health officials said. According to the World Health Organization, West Nile Fever symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, body aches, nausea, vomiting and swollen lymph glands.
