Gujarat Himachal Pradesh election dates to be announced today

The Election Commission on Thursday announced that Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections will be held on November 9 and votes will be counted on December 18.

Speaking to members of the press, Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti said measures to help differently-abled voters are already in place in both states.

The Chief Election Commissioner said VVPAT machines will be used in all constituencies in Himachal Pradesh because of which a voter will be able to see to which party, symbol and candidate his vote has gone to. Elections in Gujarat in 2012 were held in two phases on 13 and 17 December 2012 respectively.

The last date for filing nominations will be October 23 while the scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations will be allowed till October 24. The election results will be declared on 18th December.

Joti said the model code of conduct in Himachal Pradesh comes into effect immediately under which the state government can not take policy decisions.

To assess poll preparedness, a team of Election Commission officials headed by the CEC was on a visit to Gujarat recently. "The height of voting compartments will be increased to 30 inches", said CEC AK Jyoti on Himachal Pradesh polls.

The Commission has also increased the size of the VVPAT paper trail.

# Himachal Pradesh will have 136 all women managed booths for the first time.

"No. The voter (sic) won't get the slip".

While the term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on January 22, that of the 68-member Himachal House will come to an end on January 7.
