Voters lined up at a polling center in Grand Bassa County
The final results are due to be declared today by Liberia's National Elections Commission (NEC).
The Liberty Party, whose candidate Charles Brumskine was considered a front-runner to take over from Nobel Peace Prize victor and outgoing leader, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, said it would consider taking legal action if the National Elections Commission (NEC) did not act on its demands. The victory is believed to have boosted his political image across the West African country ahead of the 2017 presidential poll which held on Tuesday, October 10.
Wenger said, "I would like to congratulate one of my former players, who became president of Liberia, George Weah". In 2011, he also ran for the vice-president role on the losing ticket.
Unofficial early results announced by the station favoured the ex-soccer star Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change and Vice President Joseph Boakai of the ruling Unity Party. As Africa's first female president, Sirleaf has overseen Liberia's recovery from a hard past marked by civil war and recently by an outbreak of the viral Ebola disease.
If eventually confirmed as victor of the presidential election, George Weah has an onerous task of stepping into Sirleaf's shoes.
He then moved to England, playing for Chelsea and City towards the end of his career.
Vote-counting continued across Liberia yesterday following presidential elections that are likely to go to a run-off, with 20 candidates contesting, local media and observers say. A runoff election, if needed, would come two weeks after that announcement.
