Boy Scouts to recruit girls

Local Boy Scout leaders welcome the decision to allow girls to join

Girls in Boy Scouts? What DFW scouting leaders are saying

It's official. After making requests for a year, girls can now become Boy Scouts.

Starting next year, girls will be able to join Cub Scouts.

"Girls would be able to join as cub scouts, in cub scout packs that would be single gender cub scout dens, but would be able to be a Cub scout as a girl", Mike Butler, scout executive explained. "Girl Scouts is for girls only and is a single-gender environment".

Most people say they are against the idea, but local Nesheim says the discussions in Virginia about girls in Cub Scouts have been positive. Numerous den leaders in Cub Scouts are women, and girls participate in the Explorer, Venturing and STEM Boy Scout programs, Butler said.

CEO for the Girl Scouts of Southwest Indiana Aimee Stachura says, "Every organization has competition and that's just part of it".

These girls have no plans to leave their Girl Scout troop.

The Cub Scouts is a program for pre-adolescents that often leads to entrance into the Boy Scouts, but the decision goes further than letting young girls participate in Cub Scouts.

"Fundamentally, scouting has always been about creating the next generation of leaders".

"Last year I sold 900 boxes of Girl Scout cookies and got an iPod touch", said Flicker at her dinner table showing off the badges that she has earned as a Girl Scout.

"Now as a parent with a daughter who has the same opportunity as I do, you know it opens a door for her", Wolfe said.

There is concern that girls will leave Girl Scouts to join the Boy Scouts.

The Boy Scouts of America announced a major policy changes Wednesday.

Sowell also thinks Girl Scouts is still the best option for girls nationwide.

"I actually had someone tell me that it wasn't the same (as being an Eagle Scout), and I said, 'Well, why not?"

"I think it's great".

There are over 160 Boy Scout organizations worldwide, but the United States is one of the very few countries that does not offer a co-ed program.

"We've worked together for 100 years and we'll continue to work together to serve young people", Brown said. My daughter is going to stay in Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scouts of the US have criticized the initiative, saying it strains the century-old bond between the two organizations.

As of March, GSUSA reported 1,566,671 youth members and 749,008 adult members, down from just over 2 million youth members and about 800,000 adult members in 2014.

Some parents say they have a lot of questions on why the change is needed.
