The Duchess of Cambridge made her first public appearance on Tuesday since it was announced she was pregnant, joining husband Prince William and his brother Harry at events to mark World Mental Health Day.

Despite still suffering from severe vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum), she looked relaxed and was showing signs of a tiny baby bump.

Vanity Fair quoted a palace aide as saying: "The Duchess's condition is improving but she is still suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum". "The Duchess is delighted to be here tonight".

If Kate Middleton is absent since the announcement of her pregnancy, her return has recently been announced. She will take part in the event along with Prince William and Prince Harry to celebrate and express gratitude towards the people from across the United Kingdom devoted to the mental health field.

The couple were forced to announce that they were expecting their third child when she had to cancel a public appearance on 4 September due to sickness.

During the St James's Palace reception, William told guests that the British tradition of the "stiff upper lip" was a legacy of the trauma of the First World War.

Fiona Millar, the writer and campaigner, said she and her partner Alastair Campbell had talked to William about the interviews he and Harry did on the 20th anniversary of the death of their mother.
