The new Kindle Oasis opens for preorders today and will start shipping on October 31. Another model with 32 GB and cellular connectivity is available for $350.
Audible fans will be happy, as well: the new Oasis has a built-in Audible app. Pricing starts at $250 for the 8GB model and $280 for a 32GB incarnation.
In addition to its new casing, the Kindle Oasis has a larger, 7-inch screen, and faster page turning: 400 milliseconds, 20 percent quicker than the previous model, Amazon says.
Amazon has been notoriously coy when it comes to saying how many units of Kindle it has sold - which was the first piece of hardware Amazon ever made and sold- but Kevin Keith, Amazon's general manager of devices, said in an interview that sales are still "quite good", with "tens of millions" sold.
The reader now has a 7-inch e-ink display, a full inch larger than its predecessor.
That aluminum body is now IPX8 rated, which means the new Kindle Oasis can handle immersion for up to sixty minutes in up to two meters of fresh water.
Amazon is calling the new Oasis the "most advanced Kindle ever" thanks to various upgrades.
The design is roughly similar to the previous model. The case also doesn't have a battery in it anymore. The old Oasis was 131g without the battery cover and 238g with it on.
As for the covers, the fabric versions are $44.99 apiece, while the leather are $59.99.
'Its thin, light, and waterproof design allows readers to stay engaged in the author's world in even more places than ever before'. The older Oasis and standard Kindle will also get access to Audible through a software update that will be released in the coming months.
We know very little about what's under the hood in the new Kindle Oasis, but with our limited testing we found it worked quickly with new books loading quickly and even audio files playing instantly.
But if you think this means that Amazon has added a 3.5mm headphone jack to the Kindle, well, think again - the audio will only work across Bluetooth. If you use the audiobook service from Amazon you'll be able to listen to them on your Oasis with the use of Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. (Amazon has tried its hand at both, finding more success with Fire-branded tablets than the discontinued Fire phone).
Amazon has been selling Kindles for 10 years now, but "waterproof" never appeared on its list of incremental technological advancements - until now.
The Oasis sits above the regular Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Voyage, offering a more luxurious reading experience to those who are happy to pay a bit more.
It's still expensive though and we'd only recommend buying the Kindle Oasis (2017) if you're going to be using your ereader a lot.
