Google will deliver more timely Android Wear 2.0 updates via Play Store, no OTAs needed

New Android Wear 2.0 features can now be delivered through the Play Store, no OTA required

The company just held its annual hardware launch event last week where they announced a plethora of new products for consumers. This happens when the user updates the Android Wear app on the smartwatch. The new update brings the device up to API level 26 and introduces features such as the new background restrictions and notification channels. Hopefully, this will make it easier and faster for Google to address some of the many shortcomings of Android Wear 2.0 and give the ecosystem a much-needed boost.

Android Wear is entering a potentially critical time. Hoi Lam, who oversees IoT and wearable categories for Google, said this week that users will soon be able to receive some of these new features to their smartwatches via Google Play store.

The post mentions that Google has already rolled out such an update via the PlayStore last week that included third-party chat app support in Contacts, reduce accidental entry into the watch face picker and improve PlayStore discoverability for new users apart from several other features and bug fixes. Though the update arrives after a long wait of eight months, however with this move, Google intends to pour in more improvements to be released without waiting for huge OTA updates.

Moreover, this was further confirmed by a Googler, and he posted on G+ about the same, the updates will now get delivered from Play store, making them quickly spread across many users.
