"Under the "Mera Pehla 4G Smartphone" initiative, Airtel will partner with multiple mobile handset manufacturers to create an "open ecosystem" of affordable 4G smartphones and bring them to market for virtually the price of a feature phone", it added. Smartphones under the initiative will be available from offline stores, with after sales being handled by the device manufacturers themselves. You'd then have to make at least Rs 3000 worth of recharges for the first 18 months to receive a Rs 500 cashback, followed up by another Rs 3000 spread over 18 months to get Rs 1000 as cashback.
Like Reliance Jio that has started delivery of its JioPhone last month, Airtel also promises cashback to its customers. However, the cashback will be deposited in your Airtel Payments Bank account. The company claims that it takes Rs 3,499 to build the new Indian Karbonn A40 Indian. The dual-SIM phone runs Android Nougat software and is backed by a 1,400mAh battery. The phone also has a 4-inch display (with 480 x 800 pixels resolution), and there is Dual SIM compatibility.
Karbonn A40 Indian is powered by a 1.3 Ghz processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. The storage can be expanded additionally up to 32GB via a MicroSD card slot. Similar to the JioPhone, the price tag of Rs 1,399 is the effective price.
What is Rs 169 Special Plan for Airtel 4G Phone?
Airtel India launches a most affordable Android smartphone for just INR 1,399 (effective) in partnership with the Karbonn, the original smartphone OEM from India. But will it be able to take on the already popular Reliance Jio Phone?
Airtel's 4G smartphone is bundled with a monthly pack of Rs 169, which offers data and call benefits. However, the unlimited calling might not include calls made while in the roaming network.
This plan comes against the backdrop of Reliance Industries Ltd's telecoms arm Jio unveiling a low-priced 4G-enabled phone in July for a one-time refundable deposit of 1,500 rupees. However, to claim the cash refund benefit, recharges worth Rs 3,000 must be done within the first 18 months (to claim the first refund installment of Rs 500) and another Rs 3,000 over the next 18 months (to claim the second refund installment of Rs 1,000).
The 4-inch full-touch screen Karbonn A40 Indian handset has full access to Google Play Store, including YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp.
"We are delighted to partner with Karbonn to remove barriers to smartphone adoption and enable millions of Indians to leapfrog to a full touchscreen smartphone experience", said Raj Pudipeddi, Director - Consumer Business & CMO, Bharti Airtel. Connectivity options include: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Global Positioning System.
Airtel says the Karbonn A40 Indiansmartphone will be "completely with the customer, and there is no need to return the device to Airtel/ Karbonn at any point to claim the cash benefit".
