The new version won't look like the snazzy computer games available today, instead it has deliberately been made to appeal to the nostalgia of 20-and-30-somethings who had one back in the day.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the small egg-shaped digital pet the Tamagotchi will be released in the U.S. for $15 (~R203) but there's no word yet on whether the toy will be released in other parts of the world.

Going on sale in the United States in November, the new set of Tamagotchi toys are smaller than the originals - they've shrunk in size by about 60% - but otherwise look and operate much like people in their late 20s and early 30s will remember. The packaging design is the same as the original. It's your full time jobs, and families, and activities.

"For many Generation X kids, the Tamagotchi device can be considered America's first and favourite digital pet", said marketing director for Bandai America Tara Badie. Still, it is likely we'll see some individuals attempting to buy large quantities to resell on eBay at ridiculously marked up prices, so don't delay in getting one if you want it.

This isn't the first time Bandai has revived the toy.

The new version of the egg-shaped device is slightly smaller than the original, which has upsides and downsides.

Back in the late 90s, Tamagotchis were immensely popular the world over. It goes through different life stages, such as hatching from an egg, and demands attention, like asking to be fed or played with.

The toy is 60 percent smaller than the original Tamagotchi but aside from that not much has changed.
