14th patient dies after Florida nursing home tragedy

09 October 2017, 11:22 | Melissa Porter

The layoffs - 245 in total - for the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were reported Friday by the Sun Sentinel.

Nursing home administrator Jorge Carballo said in an earlier statement that "the center and its medical and administrative staff diligently prepared" for the hurricane.

Police say two women who were taken from an overheated Florida nursing home that lost its air conditioning during Hurricane Irma have died, becoming the 13th and 14th fatalities linked to the home.

Workers losing their jobs include occupational, speech and physical therapists, nurses and dietary aids. Five more died later that day and others died in the following days.

A criminal investigation is under way after patients died in sweltering heat when the center lost power during the storm. AHCA later halted Medicaid payments and finally pulled The Rehabilitation Center's license entirely. The nursing home is affiliated with the Larkin Community Hospital.

In its notification to the state, dated September 27, the Rehabilitation Center said it has closed permanently.

The notice to the state was provided under the Worker Adjustment and Restraining Notification Act of 1988, which is created to protect workers and their families by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of a plant closing or mass layoffs.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued emergency rules later that month.

The Florida Health Care Association, however, says the deadline can not be reached, the Sun Sentinel reports. The commission will put proposed constitutional amendments on the November 2018 ballot.
