Yankees continue dominance of Orioles
The New York Yankees have enjoyed prolific seasons against the Baltimore Orioles in their history but nothing quite like the first 17 games between the teams. The Orioles set a franchise record for runs allowed to an opponent since moving from St. Louis following the 1953 season.
Two more were by Austin Hays, who had his first two major league hits, a single in the third, and a two-run home run in the ninth.
This afternoon, the Yankees send Jordan Montgomery to the mound while the Orioles counter with Jeremy Hellickson, who was recovered from the trash heap by the Orioles and has been pitching decently for them.
Didi Gregorius went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in a lopsided defeat of the Orioles on Saturday.
Still, Ynoa pitched well for his second Orioles start, allowing two earned runs to a Yankees offense that had scored in double digits five times in the first seven meetings betweenthe teams in NY.
Baltimore is pitching to a 16.43 ERA in the first three games of this series, continuing a trend of sub-par pitching no matter where they face the Yankees.
In the lineup after sitting out Friday with lower back stiffness, Frazier drove home Gregorius with a 416-foot drive to center in the seventh. Godley allowed just five hits with zero walks while striking out seven batters. Even if the division escapes them, NY look to be in the driver's seat for a wildcard berth. Since Manny Machado hit a game-winning homer off Dellin Betances on September 5, the Orioles are 1-9 in their last 10 games.
During this trip, the Orioles have scored 21 runs while batting.190 (56-for-294).
Miguel Andujar had a spectacular Yankees debut, going 3-for-4 with four RBI on June 28, at Chicago. It was Severino's 15th start of the season in which he allowed two or fewer earned runs.
Sunday's scheduled starter CC Sabathia has been pushed back to pitch Tuesday against Minnesota, because as Girardi said, "we're trying to keep CC off that turf" in Toronto next weekend due to concerns over his balky knee. Jimenez enters with a 1.60 WHIP and 126 strikeouts in 134 2/3 innings. As a starting pitcher, he is 5-10 with a 7.15 ERA. Since then, they are 1-8 in their last nine games and 5 1/2 games out of the second wild card. Lugo lasted just three innings as he fell to 6-5 on the season. Toronto was where Sabathia needed to be pulled after three innings after experiencing pain in the knee August 8.
Jimenez has struggled against the Yankees in three outings (two starts) this season, posting a 11.42 ERA.
With two outs in the sixth and the White Sox holding a comfortable seven-run lead over Detroit, the second baseman didn't get to a grounder by JaCoby Jones, keeping the inning alive Thursday.
But the Orioles didn't muster much offensively against Yankees right-hander Luis Severino (13-6), their only runs in eight innings against himcoming on Welington Castillo's opposite-field two-run homer to right in the second inning.
