Birmingham are 23rd in the table after their first eight league games, above only winless, newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers.

Before signing a one-year extension in May, Redknapp, who has also managed Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Portsmouth and Southampton during a long and successful career, had worked without payment.

Birmingham City have sacked manager Harry Redknapp following six straight defeats in all competitions.

The 70-year-old manager previously took charge at St. Andrews last season, guiding the club to safety following Gianfranco Zola's disastrous spell in charge.

"I am disappointed. It's been hard, I have had one week with a new team and new players, one week".

Speaking after the loss to Preston but before his departure was announced, Redknapp told BBC WM 95.6: "Fans deserve better and that was my motivation to carry on this season".

Although after making 14 signings over the summer, including signing Jota from Brentford for a club record fee, some are wondering whether firing Redknapp was the smartest decision.

He said: "I thought we played well first half, I only asked them to do exactly the same in the second half as what we did first". This season the target was much bigger, get them out of the second tier of football but in the good way.

"I had to do well this year but I would have stayed because I loved it there, absolutely loved my time there".

"I gave them a hard time at half-time and they responded well to come back after trailing by a single goal". He takes the job in a caretaker role.
