Irma knocks out power to about 7.3 million
Eight residents of a Florida nursing home died after Hurricane Irma knocked out the facility s power supply, the Sun-Sentinel reported on Wednesday.
Several homes, businesses and facilities lost power after the deadly hurricane but the consequences at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hill, which is a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, were the most deadly.
As a careful step, police are checking the other 42 nursing homes and helped living offices in the city of Hollywood, Sanchezsaid.
Prior to the hurricane, Broward County did not list the nursing home as one of the top priority facilities for restoring power after the storm, the Washington Post reported.
Temperatures in South Florida this week have been in the 80s.
Hollywood police Chief Tomas Sanchez said that five people have died and 115 patients were evacuated. They were found by first responders answering an early morning emergency call.
During a news conference Wednesday, FPL said that of the 4.4 million customers that were without power after Hurricane Irma, in a matter of two days more than 60 percent of that has been restored. Residents have increasingly expressed anger at Florida Power & Light, the only electricity company on the East coast of Florida, for what they say was inadequate planning or structural reinforcements before the storm.
Irma hit southwest Florida on Sunday morning as a risky Category 4 hurricane, the second-highest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.
The eight people who died at the nursing home were between the ages of 71 to 99.
Hurricane Irma, known as "the most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade", struck Florida, causing a Murray State student's family to seek safety elsewhere. Others were found in critical condition, some with trouble breathing, said Hollywood spokeswoman Raelin Story.
Calls to the owner and other officials at the Hollywood home were not immediately returned, but the facility's administrator, Jorge Caballo, said in a statement that it was "cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome".
Shortly after, first lady Melania Trump tweeted that she would accompany her husband to Florida on Thursday. "This is a state that I know very well, as you understand".
CBS4's Carey Codd said Summerland Key, one of the hardest hit by the storm, remained eerily quiet and dark.
"There are more electrical people in this state, I think, than ever accumulated anywhere in the world", the president said, referring to the scores of fix teams that have poured in from several states.
"A lot of things were going on, it is just not a good place", Mitchell says of the nursing home, her voice shaking.
