Police said they plan to enforce a policy of no weapons or masks in the area directly surrounding the monument; however Virginia is an open carry state and those wanting to carry guns up to that point will be allowed to.

The gathering's unpermitted "Legacy not Hate" rally was booked to start Saturday morning at the Robert E. Lee Monument on Monument Avenue in Richmond.

There are multiple street closures and a large police presence across Richmond today as hundreds of people hit the streets for rallies against supporters of the Confederate monuments in the city.

The rally will be met with a counter-protest from the North Alabama Democratic Socialists of America and the Tennessee Valley Progressive Alliance.

"We don't precisely know who is coming", Durham said. One person was killed and 19 were injured after a man with ties to a white supremacist group rammed his vehicle into a crowd of counter protesters.

Counter-protesters are expected at the rally, raising concerns of possible violence like what happened in Charlottesville last month. In August for example, conservative far-right "free speech" rallies held in Boston and San Francisco were both overshadowed and, ultimately disbanded after massive crowds of counter-protesters took over their spaces. According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, organizers of the "Protect The General Robert E. Lee Monument Rally" had two of their truck tires slashed. "That makes no sense".

September 16, 2017The woman detained earlier near the Stuart statue has been charged with disorderly conduct.

While pro-Confederate rally organizers wouldn't provide a full comment after they disbanded their rally ahead of schedule, they told Richmond Times Dispatch reporter Ned Oliver, "we were peaceful" when asked if they felt like they'd accomplished what they'd been hoping to with their event.

Jessica Lawrence, a Richmond activist who planned to march Saturday from the new Maggie Walker statue on Broad Street to Monument Avenue, interrupted the group's 11 a.m. press conference outside the Virginia State Capitol.
