Bryce Harper's Scary Knee Injury Diagnosed As A "Significant" Bone Bruise

Giants, Nationals headed in different directions

Washington Nationals Bryce Harper left prepares to hit San Francisco Giants Hunter Strickland after being hit with a pitch in the eighth inning of a baseball game Monday

Both teams were able to call up a 26th player for the doubleheader, and both chose hitters over pitchers: Orlando Calixte for the Giants and Pedro Severino for the Nationals.

During Baker's two years between jobs, Giants manager Bruce Bochy passed him on the all-time managerial victories list. "He's going to get an MRI", manager Dusty Baker said. If Harper has that same injury, that would devastate the team's chances of reaching their ultimate goal of a World Series championship.

Jackson got the nod last Saturday in place of Gio Gonzalez (paternity list), overcoming a four-run first inning to work four more clean frames in a 7-4 setback at the Chicago Cubs.

But the game is unlikely to have an impact on the playoff race, as the Nationals lead the NL East by 14 1/2 games and the Giants are out of contention. And they won't have a rested starter to take the ball on Wednesday. One of those veteran players is Edwin Jackson, the well-traveled right-hander who is slated to start Friday at home against the San Francisco Giants. The Nationals are 69-45 and the Giants are 46-71, including 0-4 this year against Washington. It's insane but it's definitely great to see him up in spirit and walking around and know that he won't be significantly out for a period of time or just hurt period.

The start of the game was delayed three hours, one minute by rain Saturday and there was a light rain in the first inning.

Despite the horrific accident, Harper did manage to walk around the club house following the game.

Even though first baseman Ryan Zimmerman is having an All-Star season, Washington's title hopes hinge largely on Harper's health. He is among the National League's leaders in batting average, home runs and RBIs this season. This season, with the Giants off in a ditch, Baker is set to pass him once more.

"When talking about building an organization, you'd be short-sighted you'd be short-sighted to think about the 25 men on the major league roster", Rizzo said.

NOTES: Giants RHP Mark Melancon, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was activated off the disabled list and INF Miguel Gomez (right knee inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 9.
