Venezuela's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino branded Trump's threat as "a insane act", on Friday. "We have many options for Venezuela", he said.

"We have troops all over the world in places that are very far away. But I support peace, I support safety and I support having to get very tough if we have to to protect the American people and also to protect our allies", Trump said.

President Trump's threat, however, is a major escalation and seen as an "act of craziness" by Venezuela's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino.

In response, the White House said Trump would gladly speak to his Venezuelan counterpart, when democracy had been restored in the country.

A reporter asked if he meant to say the USA would lead a military operation in the South American country.

Maduro, who has in the past accused Washington of colluding with the opposition to unseat him, also indicated that the USA may have had a role in an attack on a military base in northern Venezuela last weekend.

"The United States stands with the people of Venezuela in the face of their continued repression by the Maduro regime".

And he stressed that they were issued by Trump a day after the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ratified his willingness to have talks with his USA counterpart, adding "The moment has come for the worldwide community to stop US aggression against the Venezuelan people".

The restrictions were introduced after the U.S. labeled as "illegitimate" the Constituent Assembly elections, which took place in Venezuela in June.

The Trump administration, along with many other countries, has been critical of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his creation of a new constituent assembly.

The remarks come a day after the Trump administration slapped new sanctions on eight of Venezuela's politicians and security figures.

Violent demonstrations since April have left more than 120 people dead in the country. We have many options for Venezuela.

Trump has been critical of Maduro's decision to allow an all-powerful legislative body to crush the elected members of parliament who oppose him. Maduro and former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez have long argued that the USA has been trying to undermine them and want to force a coup in the country.
