Redskins Doug Williams maintains that 2017 roster is the best

Redskins outside linebacker Trent Murphy suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during Thursday's preseason opener and will miss the rest of the season, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Murphy's injury occurred during a Baltimore Ravens run play midway through the first quarter. "It's unfortunate, you know, just wrong place at the wrong time".

Coming off of a nine sack breakout year in 2016, Murphy would have been suspended the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs had he not been injured.

The Redskins also signed free agent wide receiver Jamari Staples on Saturday and waived rookie offensive tackle Kevin Bowen, designated as injured.

From a big-picture standpoint, however, this is only bad news for a defense that already was a bit thin up front even before Murphy was lost for the season.

Staples, 22, split his college career between UAB and Louisville.
