Encounter breaks out in Kashmir's Shopian, 2-3 terrorists believed to be trapped
According to a senior police official, three terrorists were shot down by security personnel and a counter-operation is now underway.
Earlier security forces along with Rashtriya Rifles, state police and the CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on a tip of presence of terrorists in the area.
Sources said taking cover of the darkness, the militant commanders are reported to have escaped from the area while three militants identified as Irfan-ul-Sheikh, Umar Majeed and Adil Malik, were killed in the encounter.
According to ANI, three militants have been killed in the gunbattle.
Jammu and Kashmir police chief S.P. Vaid tweeted on the success: "One of terrorists killed today morning at Shopian is identified as Yasin Itoo; operational commander of Hizbul Mujahideen".
The militants fired at the Army building in Kalaroos area during the night, a police official said. Meanwhile, the search operation is on to hunt the militants.
Earlier, two Army men were martyred and three others injured in the encounter.
Five soldiers were injured in the gunfight yesterday and were evacuated to 92 Base Hospital of the Army for treatment.
At least 130 militants and 39 soldiers have died in clashes so far this year, officials say.
Clashes broke out in the village Saturday evening with youth hitting roads and throwing brickbats on government forces, apparently in a bid to help militants break the cordon. Many among the injured have suffered bullet and pellet injuries, doctors said, but their condition is stable.
