Looking at the sun directly, even just the sliver of sun visible before the total eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage.

That is largely because this year's spectacle will be the first in 99 years to span the entire continental United States - the world's third most populous nation - across a 70-mile-wide (113-km) path over 14 states, from the Pacific coast of OR to the Atlantic shore of SC. As the moon passes by the sun, the moon completely blocks the sunlight in an area of total eclipse and blocks a portion of the sun's light in areas of partial eclipse. Normal sunglasses don't provide enough protection.

"We've SOLD OUT of Eclipse Glasses!"

The American Astronomical Society has a list of reputable eclipse glasses and handheld viewers on its website - stamped with this approval code: 12312-2.

The public is encouraged to come and learn about the Solar Eclipse that will take place on August 21, and how to view the eclipse safely. If it is scratched or damaged, throw it away. Outside of the path of totality, always use solar filters.

Amazon recently sent out an email to customers to let them know some of the solar eclipse glasses they have been selling were not confirmed safe for viewing the eclipse.
