Officials say Ohio norovirus outbreak tied to doughnut shop
Toledo-Lucas County Health Department officials said that cases of the virus linked to food eaten at the restaurant has climbed to almost 400 while 27 people fell ill by coming in contact with those who who ate there (secondary infections). Owners have cooperated with investigators throughout the process, health officials note.
Health officials say a total of 27 people from the two northwest OH counties have fallen ill after coming in contact with someone who had eaten Mama C's products.
All of those sickened, except those sickened with secondary infections, had eaten food from the restaurant between Augusts 4 and August 8, 2017.
"I was texted Sunday morning about 2 a.m. or so that there was something going on".
On Friday, health inspectors cleared Mama C's Donuts to resume business. According to Greg Moore, program coordinator with the county health department, "specimens" were sent to the Ohio Department of Health for norovirus testing and three came back positive for the virus.
Norovirus, which spreads easily through food and drink, inflames the stomach and intestines and often causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
Delray Busch, who has been eating at the store for two years, plans to return to Mama C despite her three-year-old daughter catching the virus earlier this week.
Zgodinski said he expects the restaurant to be closed for at least a few more days. "Monday morning, we came in and started the investigation and found out that, at this point in time, the investigation is looking to Mama C's out in Maumee relative to a norovirus outbreak", Zgodinski told WTOL-TV. The department only posted an image on Thursday on its Facebook to protect people from the norovirus.
But an infected individual can spread the virus up to two weeks after the symptoms disappear, unknowingly passing the virus through close contact like shaking hands. They explained what the symptoms are, and which precautions you should take if you have them. Influenza is primarily a respiratory illness, characterized by symptoms like high fever, body aches, sneezing, a runny nose or a sore throat. Anyone else experiencing symptoms consistent with norovirus should also refrain from handling food for others until 72 hours after their symptoms go away. These symptoms typically last one to three days.
