Severe monsoon flooding and landslides killed almost two dozen people in eastern Nepal on Saturday.

Heavy rains have lashed Nepal for the past three days causing flooding and landslides at several places in the Himalayan country.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, seven persons were killed in Sunsari district in southern Nepal.

Footage aired on Nepali TV showed villagers wading through waist-high water with their belongings and using boats to reach higher ground. Biratnagar airport has been closed after flood water gushed into the airport area.


In the popular jungle safari resort of Sauraha in Chitwan, hotels were forced to shift their guests to higher floors as water rushed in.

Highways were either damaged or inundated, disrupting transport, the police said. "In Surkhet district, we have evacuated about 200 people to shelters", the statement said.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed his condolences and urged people to remain.

The DHM has also forecast heavy rains in western Nepal, where floods have already swept away three concrete bridges.
