Keselowski wins pole for Pure Michigan 400

13 August 2017, 05:30 | Erica Roy

Brad Keselowski will be on the pole for Sunday's NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway after he burned past the competition in qualifying Friday. Right now just three drivers will qualify for the playoffs on points and should another different victor emerge this weekend, the battle for the final playoff spots really intensifies.

Kyle Larson's three career Cup victories all have been on 2-mile tracks. The No. 21 Ford, which was fastest in Friday's only practice session and in both of the first two rounds, faded in the final round of qualifying.

TV/RADIO: NBCSN will broadcast the race at 3 p.m. Coverage begins at 1:30 p.m. with NASCAR America Sunday, followed by Countdown to Green at 2:30 p.m.

Larson plans to fly back to MI late Saturday night. Larson, who has seven runner-up finishes this year to go along with his two wins, has been in a bit of a rut lately, finishing out of the top 20 in his past three races.

Martin Truex Jr. is on cloud nine right now. Truex has a 116-point lead over Kyle Busch in the standings.

Kyle Busch, who has a long-running rivalry with Keselowski, was in no mood to discuss those comments after finishing a frustrating third in the truck race Saturday at MI. Elliott is qualified for the playoffs by points at the moment but is by no means safe as there are a lot of good drivers still searching for their first victory this season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn't having a good final year, but today could help him get on track. This isn't the end of the line if Junior doesn't win, there are three more races after MI and Dale has won at two of those Bristol and Richmond. But Busch has won six poles this season - twice as many as any other driver.

Through 22 races completed this season, Suarez has accumulated one top-five and eight top-10 finishes in his rookie season in the MENCS. Matt Kenseth is listed at attractive 18-1 odds this weekend and should not be forgotten when looking for favorites for the Pure Michigan 400. In 17 races at Michigan, Logano has two wins, five top five and 12 top ten finishes with an average finish of 12.1.

The bad luck and bad finishes just seems to keep piling up on Joey Logano this season. He also finished ninth here earlier this year, which was his third-best finish of 2017. "It's a special track for me to have any kind of success at", he said.

Starting 33rd this week, Dillon makes an elite value pay considering the #13 auto got better on Saturday posting the 28th and 24th fastest speeds.

"And like I said in the past, when you run in the top five consistently, you can win any time". With that, let's jump in and take a look at some of the top picks this week. Logano earned the second starting spot with speed of 203.063 miles per hour, just six thousandths of a second behind Keselowski.
