Lampard believes Matic will help to transform United into Premier League title contenders this season, as he suggested Paul Pogba may be the biggest victor from the arrival of a new holding midfielder who will give him more freedom to get forward. Bakayoko has not and I saw him in the Champions League previous year.

"But [Conte] spoke about him in such a way about his incredible importance to the job they did previous year - Matic and N'Golo Kante in front of that back three - and I have no doubt that he has not sanctioned that move, he is not happy with it and ultimately he is uncomfortable with it".

Conte, who was rumoured to be at odds with the Chelsea board regarding transfer strategy earlier this summer, has publicly claimed that Matic will be a "great loss" at Stamford Bridge.

It's said that chiefs will wait to see how Chelsea fare in their opening games of the season before delving into the market late on for last-minute raids. "But they are very experienced and they also had some chances to score another because at the end we tried to go with everything to score and they had some counter-attacks".

"There is very rarely such big transfers between champions to clubs that are challenging them and it is a odd move". He was good in some games, inexperienced in others. My idea was to give Bakayoko the right time to adapt in this league behind Matic.

Neville had his say on the matter at the Premier League launch in London today.

'I think I had the benefit of realising how good he is when he's playing just in front of you - on and off the ball.

But doubts are creeping in over whether they have enough depth to retain their trophy as well as compete with Europe's elite in the Champions League.

"You are not only improving United in defensive midfield, you are making Pogba better, [Ander] Herrera better".

"I think the [Matic] sale at this moment in time, with that Chelsea squad, could cost them the league".
