Virginia's governor declared a state of emergency after a white nationalist rally turned violent in Charlottesville, Virginia. According to the Associated Press, at least one person was killed and approximately twenty others injured in the attack.

The nationalists were holding the rally in protest over plans by the city of Charlottesville, Virginia, to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.

The Take 'Em Down Jax group called for an emergency rally Saturday night at the Jacksonville Landing to show solidarity with counterprotestors caught up in the violence in Virginia.

After the park was cleared, protesters carrying Confederate flags, Nazi symbols and other anti-Semitic signs marched to McIntire Park, a larger location where city officials had previously tried to move the rally.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said he and the first lady considered both men their close friends. Authorities declared an unlawful assembly and police ordered people to disperse.

Donald Trump, addressing the situation from his private golf club in New Jersey, declined to condemn white nationalism and instead said the blame for the violence lies with "many sides".

"The president said that "what is vital now is a swift restoration of law and order and the protection of innocent lives".

He added that hate and division in the country must stop, but that it is not linked to his presidency because it has "been going on for a long, long time". Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer said in a statement that the rally was "a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance" that passed by the statue Jefferson, who founded the university in 1819.

Colleen Cook, 26, stood on a curb shouting at the rally attendees to go home.

"But the incitement of hatred that got us here is as real and condemnable as the white supremacists in our streets", the former Democratic presidential nominee tweeted on Saturday afternoon (August 12). "There was violence between protesters and counter protesters today".

Traci Blackmon, a black woman who was inside the church in Charlottesville, Virginia, described the fear of those people inside. He also said "there is no place for this kind of violence in America".
