Trainers helped Wolfe onto a cart, and he was taken to the locker room.

Wolfe still has to undergo and MRI, but a person close to the situation told ESPN's Josina Anderson that Wolfe simply suffered an ankle sprain and he is "very lucky".

"Great news, " said Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib. His backup Shaq Barrett will miss more time because of a hip injury.

The Broncos defensive line was already thinning when second-string nose tackle Billy Winn went down with what turned out to be a season-ending ACL tear during Thursday's preseason opener against Chicago.

Wolfe, a leader and a versatile inside force, appeared to tangle legs with starting right tackle Menelik Watson on a running play moments after team drills started. Wolfe posted 5.5 sacks each of the past two years. Safety T.J. Ward has missed the last week with a hamstring injury.

That performance earned him a four-year extension worth $36.7 million just before the Broncos' victory in Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers.

Broncos coach Vance Joseph said following the team's practice, the preliminary exam by the medical staff showed "the first look, it wasn't serious". Other rotational and depth players at defensive end include Zach Kerr, Adam Gostis, Harris and Shakir Soto. Losing Wolfe, their best defensive lineman, would have struck a major blow to a defense looking to improve significantly against the run.
