Amazon is issuing refunds to customers who purchased suspect solar eclipse glasses

PROPER EYEWEAR NEEDED TO WATCH TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN

Stores selling out of eclipse glasses

Eclipse watchers in the 60 to 70-mile wide "path of totality" that will cut through much of the middle US could briefly look directly at the eclipse without protection when the moon fully covers the sun.

Some vendors and online retailers have started to run out of the glasses, said American Astronomical Society spokesman and self-proclaimed "eclipse chaser" Rick Fienberg.

"Make sure to help children to use solar filters and eclipse glasses properly", Dr. Ronold Tesch said.

This time, the path of total eclipse will be about 70 miles wide and begins in OR on the west coast and travels to SC on the east coast, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reports on its eclipse website, eclipse2017.nasa.gov.

The partial eclipse is scheduled to start in Brookings at 11:37 a.m.

Experts say you should not try to watch the eclipse with the naked eye, and that regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection.

A shop steward for Local 2665, the union that includes Cedar Hill Firefighters, said they ordered about 250 glasses from Amazon to hand out.

A limited supply of free eclipse glasses are also available from the Brookings Public Library (limit two per family).

As August 21 nears, scammers are flooding the market with fake solar eclipse glasses. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.

Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright sun. Do not remove them while looking at the sun. "The intense solar rays coming through the devices will damage your eyes".

If you received this email from Amazon, there are other places to purchase eclipse glasses.
