Earthquake of magnitude 6.5 hits Indonesia's Sumatra; tremors felt in Singapore

BREAKING: Massive earthquake strikes sending tremors through Indonesian island

The US Geological Survey said the natural disaster Sunday (13 August) morning had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 21 miles (35km).

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to reports, tremors were felt in Singapore as well.

It was centred 46 miles west of the coastal city of Bengkulu and also felt in Singapore, about 370 miles from the epicentre.


"We did not issue tsunami warning as the quake is not potential for tsunami", he said.

Bengkulu resident Neng Hasnah said the quake felt very strong for a few seconds, forcing her and her family members to flee her house. Power outages were reported in some areas, but no structural damage was reported.

The world's largest archipelago, Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In December 2016, an quake struck Indonesia's western Aceh province killing more than 100 people, injuring many more and leaving tens of thousands homeless.
