The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Mosquito Control Section, along with the Delaware Division of Public Health Laboratory and the Department of Agriculture, detected the West Nile earlier this month along the Delaware River in the Wilmington area and again, in west-central Kent County.

The positive sample was found in a pool of mosquitoes tested by the Kent County Health Department in the Grand Rapids zip code of 49507, according to a news release from the department.

One human case was reported.

"With confirmation that West Nile virus is in the community, everyone needs to follow the recommendations for protecting yourself from mosquito bites", said Adi Pour, the county's health director.

So far, neither virus has been found in humans or horses.

The West Nile virus was first detected in New York City 18 years ago, and since 1999, the number of human cases has ranged from three to 47 annually.

22News talked to residents about how they avoid coming in contact with diseases like West Nile Virus. Of the 317 West Nile cases overall, 38 (15 percent) have died due to their infection.

The spraying is to reduce high populations of mosquitoes, which can carry the West Nile virus. In some people, it can cause a serious and potentially fatal infection of the brain and spinal cord.
