Adults & Teens are invited to learn more about the eclipse with Murray State University's Dr. Matt Williams.

They're not as stylish as Ray Bans but they will allow you to look at the historic event without eye damage as long as you keep them on.

"I'm a lifelong learner, and it's something interesting and something that's happening now". When I heard about it I automatically said, "I'm going". While many have already made preparations for the event, here are some facts about the upcoming eclipse.

The only time it's ever safe to look at the sun is during a total eclipse, when the sun is completely behind the moon.

Astronomers from the U.S. Naval Observatory also got a lofty view: They tracked the eclipse from almost a mile in the air on the Navy dirigible dubbed Los Angeles, which lifted off from New Jersey and observed from Long Island. In years past for example in 2015 Night Sky enthusiasts, were able to observe the Perseids under dark sky conditions.

The Full and New moon coordinates land on the intersection between the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun (the Ecliptic) and the inclined plane of the lunar orbit.

Viewers ask us at WBIR every day where they can buy solar eclipse glasses. "Also, never look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope or binoculars, even if you are wearing eclipse glasses or holding solar filters".

People in the path of the total eclipse can expect twilight-like darkness.

Aspiring eclipse watchers in northern IL only will be able to see about 87 percent of the sun obscured. If the NASA map is correct, some locations toward the northern part of the county may see a 100 percent total eclipse, while others south of the line that goes diagonally through Wyandotte County may see, for example, a 99.9 percent eclipse.

Penn Dixie will host a viewing of the eclipse from 1 to 4 p.m. August 21, and visitors will be able to view the eclipse through several telescopes, learn astronomy from the staff and volunteers, participate in hands-on science activities and collect fossils.

NASA photographer Bill Ingalls recommends focusing on the human experience of watching the eclipse. You know, the one we're supposed to wear to protect our eyes from the blazing sun. Normal sunglasses don't provide enough protection.

Several libraries are giving away the glasses for free. The American Astronomical Society has a list of reputable eclipse glasses and handheld viewers on its website. The glasses should be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 global safety standard and not appear scratched or damaged.

People who reach some of the gatherings will need special glasses to view the solar eclipse.

Here's how NASA describes the indirect pinhole method: "Cross the outstretched, slightly open fingers of one hand over the outstretched, slightly open fingers of the other, creating a waffle pattern".

Astronomers from all over the world will be studying this eclipse, so what will they look for? The eclipse will still be visible outside of this pathway, as a partial eclipse.

Scammers have taken advantage of the hype surrounding the eclipse and released fake protective glasses, according to the Better Business Bureau.

"It's a big event".

"Seeing a total eclipse - the beauty of it, the awe of it, the humbling of it - seeing how tiny we are, it really puts a lot of things into perspective", Espenak said.
