Gorakhpur deaths case: Adityanath orders inquiry into oxygen supplier's role

Health activists said successive governments had ignored the threat posed by encephalitis as it was a disease that affected poor, malnourished children.

"According to the Gorakhpur SP, 21 children died due to shortage of supply of liquid oxygen in BRD Medical College".

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh claims that the death of 64 children in the Gorakhpur Baba Raghav Das Medical College is a matter for Uttar Pradesh to handle and they should be left alone with it.

Indian workers examine oxygen cylinders at the Baba Raghav Das Hospital in Gorakhpur. Hospital tried to supply the oxygen by its recently installed liquid oxygen plant, but as the capacity of the plant was low itself, no substantial supply could be given.

Though District Magistrate Rajiv Rautela told reporters in Gorakhpur that seven children died in the last 24 hours, but a news agency twitted quoting the DM that 30 children had died of Encephalitis in the last 48 hours.

Modi said that till date Rs 20 lakh payment was pending with the hospital and that he had supplied liquid oxygen on Friday too, after a request made by the Divisional Commissioner. "Adityanath and Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh should immediately resign from their post".

"As Yogi is the chief minister of the state, it is his responsibility to take care of the people".

The HT report suggested that the 3,000-odd deaths are among 50,000 children killed in eastern Uttar Pradesh over the past three decades, majority due to Japanese encephalitis (JE) and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).

"However, gas cylinders were not available, but the Oxygen was being supplied through ambu bags and other means".

Opposition Congress Party Vice President Rahul Gandhi tweeted: "Deeply pained".

Local officials have denied that the deaths are linked to a lack of oxygen supply.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said that Prime Minister Modi had especially asked her to visit the hospital and get the necessary information that may help in the issue.

Adityanath also emphasised on the fact that Japanese encephalitis remains a challenge for his government and assured that a solution has been found to address the menace. The Health minister said the State government was not informed by the doctors and officials about shortage of oxygen either July 9 or August 9.

"District magistrate of Gorakhpur has also initiated a magisterial probe to find exact reasons of children death", a government spokesman said.
