Android Things Developer Preview 5 upgrades Google's IoT platform to Android O

NXP IoT platform

As noted by Google, the latest version is created to work on recent Nexus and Pixel devices running Android 7.1.1 and above. While the update is delayed, there is no info regarding this from Google. The version 4.4 brings some notable changes to the app and is now rolling out for Google Pixel, Nexus, and Android One devices.

With Intel discontinuing the Edison and Joule hardware designs, Google is embracing NXPs hardware to plump out its collection of hardware that can support Android Things.

Google Android O (dubbed as Android 8.0) will likely release in the week of August 21, revealed tipster Evan Blass on Twitter.

Android Police's managing editor David Ruddock also claims that Android O as well as its name will be released on August 21. Also, any guesses for the name? At the event, the company also gave a sneak peek into some of the features coming in Android O, the new Android version arriving later this year. Since Google has recently released the fourth and last Android O Developer Preview, it seems the now delay may not be a long one and it may release at any time. DP5 is now available within the Android Things Console, but the DP5 update will not be pushed automatically to devices without your intervention. Ruddock is of the view that the official name of Android 8.0 will be declared on August 21, the day of the solar eclipse.

The latest incarnation of the world's most popular smartphone operating system is expected to bring a raft of new features, although they aren't necessarily the attention grabbing features that we have become used to in past releases.

Google is now wrapping up the Android O as the final developer preview had been released already since last month.
